2023 is Magic City Chorus 65th anniversary year. How perfect that our costume is blue sapphire, the jewel of the 65th anniversary!

Magic City Chorus is proud of our past and continue to look forward to our future. Our current membership is 39 singers from Saskatoon, Martensville, Osler, Grandora, Prince Albert, Birch Hills, Anglin Lake and Regina. We rehearse Tuesday evenings in the Sutherland area and always have our doors open for guests and new members (Contact membership@magiccitychorus.com for more information) Women (including transgender) and non-binary people are welcome to check us out and begin the journey to membership with the chorus.
The Saskatoon Chapter of Sweet Adelines International had its beginnings in 1957, when Mary (Bowers) Blumson, who had been a Sweet Adeline in Edmonton, put an ad in the Star-Phoenix to see how much interest there was in women’s barbershop singing. The response was overwhelming, and on May 19, 1958, the Saskatoon Chapter received its charter, the first in Saskatchewan. Here is a photo of our founding members (interesting note – One of our new members is the niece of founding member Ev Mattson!!)

At that time, the chorus was part of Region 6 which consisted of Manitoba, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Saskatchewan. Competitions were held in Winnipeg and Fargo/Moorhead. The enthusiastic thirty member chorus, with Clara Ingles as director and Mary Bowers as president, had their first show (charter party), on October 4th of that same year. “Harvest Harmony” was presented in Third Avenue United Church, charging an admission of 75 cents. At that time dues were $6.00 and the hall rental of the Nutana Legion was $2.50.
In 1965, due to a redistribution of the International regions, the Saskatoon Chorus became part of lucky Region 13. This covered the areas of Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Alaska, Idaho and Washington. Then in 1981 the only all Canadian region, Region 26 was formed including Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, NWT, Yukon and Nunavut. Proudly displaying the Regional motto – ‘The Place With Space And Spirit”

Pure love of singing, the fun, the friendships, the challenge and the opportunity for personal growth have kept members actively involved in rehearsals, workshops, performances, seminars, competitions, chapter and regional board activities, charity work and fundraising. We can be proud of the successes and achievements of the strong, musical, hard-working and fun-loving members before us. We look forward to many more harmonic days and years ahead.
Congratulations Magic City Chorus on 65 years of harmony in Saskatoon!
